NOTE. (i) Conditions predisposing to hyperglycemia:
hemochromatosis (n = 3), chronic pancreatitis (n = 2),
carcinoma of pancreas (n = 1), total parenteral nutrition
(n = 6), corticosteroid (n = 179), and hydrochlorothiazide
therapy (n = 10). (ii) Use of oral hypoglycemic medication
or insulin, random glucose
200 mg/dL, fasting glucose
140 mg/dL on two occasions,
or attending an endocrine clinic for diabetes.
(iii) Diabetics excluded from final analysis (% = patients
in [iii] divided by [i] × 100). * Twenty-seven patients with both
chronic HBV and HCV infection were omitted from this table . The discrepancy in numbers compared with total
population size is due to records without data. Cirrhosis established by liver biopsy (n = 207)
or presumptive diagnosis made on clinical grounds (n = 35)
and diagnosis of noncirrhotic by liver biopsy (n = 367).
