The Hepatitis C Awareness & Prevention Campaign

Serving the Hepatitis C Community

Once Diagnosed With Hepatitis C, You Should Get Your Medical Information and Procedures in Order:

1. Get a copy of all of your medical records. This can be hard to do because of the new HIPPA regulations. Get a copy of your records at the time of service. You will not have to fill out a release and have it mailed to you that way. Keep these records in a binder. Keep the records in order by date of service.

2. If you haven't had a liver biopsy, get one! Keep a copy of the biopsy and staging in your file.

3. Have an Upper GI Endoscopy done. Keep a copy of the findings in your binder. Depending on the findings you may have to have this done again.

4. Have a Colonoscopy done. Keep a copy of the findings in your binder.

5. Get vaccinated for Hepatitis A and B if you don't have an antibody to them. A simple test to check for antibodies can be done.

6. Get your dental work done! A simple cavity can keep you from the transplant list.

7. Address all underlying medical issues, i.e. STD's, diabetes, etc.

8. Do not take over the counter medicines until you clear it with your provider (doctor).

9. STOP SMOKING! You will not be eligible for the transplant list if you have not stopped for at least 6 months.

IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CIRRHOSIS, THESE THINGS ARE PRIORITY.

10. If you have cirrhosis and you are having a hard time thinking clearly - ask your provider (doctor) for lactulose. It is a laxative that attaches the ammonia particles collecting in your brain and passes it through your bowl movements.

11. Start keeping track of your weight. Record morning and evening weight. If your weight increases steadily over a period of time, have your provider check you for Ascites (Swelling of the belly). If your legs swell it's called Edema.
